Although Jesus is described as 'emptying himself' of superhuman abilities when he, as God, became man, he seemed to have some of the psychic gifts attributed to many intensely spiritual natures. He used precognition- the knowledge of events before they occur not to alter the future but to accept it and prepare his followers for the inevitable. All the gospels report that, from the time of Peter's recognition of him as Christ, Jesus constantly foretold his death and resurrection at Jerusalem. The idea was completely foreign to his disciples, with their er conceived notions of an earthly, all-conquering Messiah.
Jesus' foreknowledge that Judas would betray him could have resulted from an accurate assessment of the man's character. But how could he know, as is recorded in all the gospels, that Peter would deny him three times before dawn?
The first three gospels also contain a somewhat confusion mixture of prophecies of the destruction of Jerusalem and the obliteration of the Temple, Which occurred in AD 70, ad the end of the world signaled by the second coming of Christ in glory. Some critics say that the accounts of Jerusalem's destruction were osibly influenced by the fact that the gospels were written after AD 70. Jesus' statement that the second coming would happen before some of his listeners died is balanced by another that only God the Father knew the timing of the event.
Jesus' awareness of the importance of the gift of precognition was summed up in his words to his disciples in the Gospel of John, 'I tell you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he' -in other words, their Lord and Master
